The healthy resort & surround
Resort town Wiek with awarded state recognition is located at the West coast of peninsula Wittow next to the "Bodden" and offers a great view upon the upstream horn hosting a magnificent nature reserve with its interesting history as well as upon the thorntrees of Hiddensee at the foot of the lighthouse.
First mentioned in 1165, Wiek was described as a trading place surrounded by hill forts. In the 14th century Wiek was known as "parochia Medowe sive Wyk“. ’Medowe' means ‚honey meadow‘ pointing at the extensive apiculture in these days and still shown in the village’s emblem nowadays. In 1819, Wiek was the biggest village at Rügen, where peasants, fishermen and handcrafters lived.
After an extensive renovation the port of Wiek was re-opened in 2003, today here Marina Wiek is based.
The old chalk loading bridge clearly can be seen as the marina’s landmark. This historic building originally was planned to function for the shipping of the chalk of Kap Argon. This project was totally given up and as consequence chalk was never shipped from Wiek.
Today the port of Wiek, placed uniquely at the North of Rügen island, convinces visitors with its unbeatable service offers, attractive environment and multiple leisure time possibilities.
The village in the „land of wind“ (Wittow) is well known for many sunny hours and healthy air, therefore a mother & child wellness clinic is situated here, too.
One of the most worth-seeing buildings in Wiek sure is the old church placed in the middle of the village. Soon after Christianisation in the 12th century a temporary church was constructed here. In the 15th century Cistercians erected the brick building which can still be seen today with its three naves, decorative West pediment and rich-shaped long sides.
Today this church is still the centre of the community and a prominent landmark. Here we find the wooden statue of St. Georg on horseback. He is said to have rescued Wittow from a great mole plague and was honoured by this statue by the grateful community.
Worth-seeing are also the Varnow stones, mighty foundlings raging out of the waters north of Wiek.
